#frischfragt, 2018, 29 questions (in multiple languages), spray paint on metal signs, posters, cards; various sizes

in collaboration with Max Griesche; shown at the 20th Kunstflecken Festival in Neumünster

#frischfragt takes its starting point from the Fragebögen (questionnaires) in Max Frisch’s diaries (1966–1971), which explore themes such as humour, marriage, friendship, property, hope, and death. For this project, 29 questions were translated into multiple languages and realized in different formats: hand-printed cards, posters, and street signs.

Each format invites a different kind of interaction. The official-looking street signs occupy public space, blending in with traffic signage and confronting passersby with intimate questions in an authoritative form. The posters, placed in typical advertising spaces, appropriate a commercial context to interrupt expectations. The hand-printed cards, distributed to visitors, allow for a private, personal engagement. A hashtag, #frischfragt, extends the work into social media, creating a digital space for reflection and exchange.

The signs were minimally altered to resemble real traffic signs, with placement, height, and typography determined individually for each question. The project stages a tension between familiar structures of authority and the disarming intimacy of personal inquiry.
